Firebird Africa sells outdoor advertising across South Africa: billboards, digital screens, and ATM screen placements. They have strong inventory in the right places. But when a marketing manager asked ChatGPT or Gemini "where should I advertise in Cape Town?", Firebird wasn't the name that came up.

Firebird partnered with BrandRadar, a managed AI visibility service that helps brands get recommended across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google, to change that.

The problem wasn't the brand. It was the evidence.

AI assistants don't recommend companies. They recommend answers, and the company behind the best answer gets the mention.

That was Firebird's gap. The website said what Firebird does. It didn't say what buyers want to know before spending a single rand: which locations are worth it, what a billboard actually costs, and whether digital beats static. Other brands had years of articles, listings, and press coverage doing that work for them. Firebird had a services page.

So when a buyer asked AI where to advertise, the AI went with what it could back up. Nothing to quote, nothing to recommend.

What BrandRadar did

Mapped the questions buyers ask AI. BrandRadar built 300 real prompts across six topics, from choosing locations to setting budgets to comparing formats. This became the scoreboard for tracking Firebird's AI visibility.

Wrote the answers. BrandRadar created location guides for Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, and highway billboards, plus buyer guides on choosing a format and understanding what billboards cost in South Africa. Every piece leads with a direct answer, then the reasoning, then the specifics. That's the structure AI pulls from.

Built authority beyond the website. BrandRadar set up directory and backlink targets, a review collection kit, and a media list for PR. AI trusts brands that other sources talk about, not just brands that talk about themselves.

What changed for Firebird Africa

Within weeks of the first content going live, every core signal started moving in the same direction:

  • AI citations quadrupled in a single month
  • AI mention rate doubled, and ChatGPT started recommending Firebird for the first time
  • AI search impressions more than doubled month on month
  • Search impressions hit their highest point of the year
  • Average Google position improved for the first time in eight months, nearly halving in a single month

The clearest sign it's working is that a buyer asked an AI where to advertise, the AI pointed them to Firebird's Cape Town locations guide, and they clicked through. Content written to be the answer was used as the answer.

The takeaway

Most brands treat AI visibility as a ranking problem. BrandRadar treats it as a reference problem. The question isn't "how do we rank higher?" It's "when AI needs to explain this topic, are we the source it reaches for?"

Location guides and cost breakdowns aren't glamorous. But they're exactly what buyers ask before they spend, and exactly what AI needs to answer with confidence.

We always knew we had the right inventory in the best locations, but it was frustrating to be invisible when buyers asked AI for recommendations. BrandRadar shifted our digital strategy from simply listing our services to becoming the authoritative answer our clients were looking for. Seeing platforms like ChatGPT and Gemini confidently recommend Firebird and watching buyers click straight through to our guides proves this approach hasn’t just boosted our metrics; it has fundamentally changed how high-intent clients find and trust us in the AI era.
